Nima Market Fire Victims Receive GH¢5,000 Aid from MP Baba Jamal Amidst Calls for Redevelopment

Ayawaso East Member of Parliament, Baba Jamal, announced on Monday a donation of GH¢5,000 to each trader affected by a devastating fire that engulfed parts of Nima Market. The MP made this commitment during a visit to the scene to commiserate with victims whose livelihoods were destroyed in the blaze, aiming to provide immediate relief as damage assessments continue.

Immediate Relief and Support

Baba Jamal stated that the financial assistance is intended to offer immediate relief, enabling affected traders to support their families while broader recovery measures are explored. He pledged to disburse the funds by the close of the upcoming weekend.

“On my own, I want to offer GH¢5,000 to each of the victims, and we want to do that immediately, maybe by the close of this weekend,” Baba Jamal announced at the site.

He described the fire as a significant tragedy for the traders and the Nima community, noting the loss of livelihoods despite no reported fatalities.

Calls for Market Redevelopment

The fire has intensified calls from MP Baba Jamal for the urgent redevelopment of Nima Market. He highlighted the market’s current congestion and the inherent vulnerability of its predominantly wooden structures as factors contributing to such incidents.

“This is one of the reasons why we need to rebuild this market. You can see the congestion. Definitely, if something like this continues, we are going to have a problem,” he warned.

The MP emphasized the market’s importance as a major commercial hub, attracting traders not only from across Ghana but also from neighbouring West African countries like Nigeria and Burkina Faso.

Broader Appeal for Assistance

Baba Jamal appealed to President John Dramani Mahama, relevant government agencies, and the general public to contribute to assisting the affected traders and improving the market’s infrastructure. He stressed the need for collective action to mitigate the impact of the disaster and prevent future occurrences.

Ongoing Investigations and Assessments

Officials from the Ghana National Fire Service and the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) are currently on-site. They are continuing their investigations to determine the cause of the fire and are conducting thorough assessments of the extent of the damage to shops and goods.

Future Outlook for Nima Market

The incident underscores the persistent challenges faced by vital urban markets in Ghana, particularly concerning safety and infrastructure. The calls for redevelopment signal a potential shift towards modernizing such commercial spaces to enhance resilience against disasters and support economic activity more effectively. The response from the MP and the ongoing assessments by official bodies are critical first steps in addressing the immediate crisis and paving the way for long-term solutions. The coming weeks will be crucial in determining the scope of redevelopment efforts and the nature of support provided to the affected traders, setting a precedent for how similar market challenges might be addressed in the future.
