NPP-USA Rejects National Election Guidelines, Upholds Branch Constitution for 2026 Polls

The New Patriotic Party’s USA Branch (NPP-USA) has decided to conduct its 2026 internal elections using its existing Branch Bylaws, deferring the adoption of the party’s newly revised national election guidelines until its annual conference in July. This decision was finalized at an emergency virtual meeting of the Branch Executive Committee (BEC) on May 27.

Branch Rejects National Directive

The NPP-USA Branch Secretary, Augustine Yao Agbenaza, communicated the decision in a letter to the party Chairman following the BEC meeting. Members voted 20 to 9 in favor of maintaining the current NPP-USA Bylaws for the upcoming elections, with four members abstaining and two not responding out of 36 present.

This resolution means the branch will proceed with its 2026 elections under the bylaws last amended on March 7, 2021. The branch secretariat has been instructed to formally inform the national leadership in Ghana of this decision in a respectful and diplomatic manner, aiming to preserve institutional harmony.

Discrepancies Between Bylaws and National Guidelines

The vote stemmed from discussions regarding a directive issued on April 8, 2026, by NPP General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong. The directive mandated all external branches to align their internal election processes with revised national guidelines, which were approved by the National Executive Committee.

NPP-USA identified four primary areas where its established bylaws conflict with the national guidelines. These discrepancies pose significant challenges to immediate compliance.
