Accra, Ghana – The opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) has issued a stern warning of potential retaliation, vowing to respond in kind to alleged harassment, intimidation, and arrests of its members by state institutions should such actions persist and the party regain power. The declaration comes amidst growing concerns from the NPP regarding the treatment of its officials and supporters.
Context of the Warning
The NPP’s General Secretary, Justin Frimpong Kodua, articulated this position during a protest on Thursday, May 14, outside the Greater Accra Regional Police Headquarters. The demonstration was prompted by a police invitation extended to NPP activist Nana Addo Nyame. Mr. Kodua’s address to the gathered party faithful formed the core of the NPP’s public statement on the matter.
Accusations Against the Ruling Party
Mr. Kodua directly accused the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) of weaponizing state institutions. He alleged that these institutions are being used to target political opponents and stifle freedom of expression. The NPP sees this as a direct threat to democratic principles.
