More than 50,000 people across Ghana’s Eastern and Ahafo regions are now benefiting from improved access to safe and reliable water, following a significant intervention by World Vision Ghana and Polytank Ghana Limited. The project, which concluded recently, has transformed communities previously reliant on distant and unsafe water sources, with some households now receiving direct connections to clean water supplies.
Transforming Daily Life and Health
The initiative has dramatically eased the daily burden for many, particularly women and children, who previously spent hours fetching water. This reduction in travel time has not only freed up valuable time but has also led to a noticeable decrease in water-borne diseases within the beneficiary communities. Reports from parents and educators indicate a positive impact on school attendance and improved concentration among students, highlighting the direct link between access to clean water and educational outcomes.
A Collaborative Effort for Sustainable Solutions
This vital project was made possible through a strategic partnership between World Vision Ghana, a non-governmental development organization, and Polytank Ghana Limited, a private sector entity. Polytank Ghana Limited contributed significantly by supplying 26 high-capacity polytanks as part of its corporate social responsibility commitment. These tanks have been instrumental in the construction, rehabilitation, and expansion of water systems across the targeted areas.
The intervention is integrated into the Ahafo Region Integrated WASH Program (ARIWP), a broader initiative designed to enhance access to clean water in underserved communities, schools, and health facilities. This program aims to create sustainable water solutions that address long-term needs.
Expanding Reach to Communities and Schools
In total, 26 communities located in the Asutifi North and Asunafo North districts of the Ahafo Region have received upgraded water services. The impact extends beyond these communities, with six communities in the Fanteakwa district of the Eastern Region also benefiting from emergency water interventions. These efforts have provided safe water to over 5,000 residents who previously faced severe water scarcity.
Furthermore, the project has prioritized educational institutions. Thirty basic schools, collectively serving more than 12,000 pupils, now have access to dependable water systems. A notable example is Akorsakrom Basic School, where a dilapidated hand pump was upgraded to a modern, solar-powered mechanized system complete with a standpipe on the school campus. This ensures a consistent supply of clean water for students throughout the school day.
Strengthening Health Facilities
The positive impact on public health is also evident, with eight clinics and health centers now equipped with reliable water supplies. This critical upgrade enhances hygiene practices, strengthens infection prevention measures, and supports essential maternal and child health services. Reliable water is fundamental to the effective operation of healthcare facilities, directly contributing to better health outcomes.
The Power of Public-Private Partnerships
World Vision Ghana emphasized that this collaboration exemplifies the crucial role of partnerships between development organizations and the private sector in addressing fundamental human needs. Access to clean and safe water is recognized as a cornerstone for improving health, bolstering education, and fostering overall community development and economic progress.
Future Outlook
The success of this initiative underscores the potential for scaled-up public-private collaborations to tackle water scarcity in other regions of Ghana and similar contexts globally. Future efforts will likely focus on expanding these successful models, ensuring long-term maintenance of water systems, and integrating WASH (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene) programs with broader community development goals. Continued investment in such partnerships will be key to achieving universal access to safe water.
