Pan-African Parliament VP Stresses Need to Educate Youth on Continent’s Role in South Africa’s Liberation

Newly elected Vice President of the Pan-African Parliament, Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings, stated in Accra on April 30th that young South Africans must be reminded of the significant contributions made by other African nations towards their country’s liberation. This call comes in the wake of recent xenophobic attacks in South Africa, highlighting a perceived disconnect between the younger generation and the continent’s shared history of solidarity.

Context of Pan-African Solidarity

The struggle against apartheid in South Africa was a defining moment for the African continent. Many nations, including Ghana, provided crucial support through financial aid, educational opportunities, asylum, and logistical assistance to those actively involved in the liberation movement. This collective effort aimed to dismantle the oppressive apartheid regime and establish a free and democratic South Africa.

A Forgotten History?

Dr. Agyeman-Rawlings expressed concern that the younger generation in South Africa may not be fully aware of these sacrifices. She emphasized that the Pan-African Parliament has a duty to educate them about the principles of unity and mutual support that have historically bound African nations together. The recent xenophobic incidents in South Africa underscore the urgency of this message, as they appear to contradict the spirit of African solidarity.
