Accra, Ghana – Dr. Kingsley Agyemang, Member of Parliament for Abuakwa South, has refuted comments made by the Chairman of the Parliamentary Health Committee, Mark Kurt Nawaane, suggesting that healthcare workers unable to cope with professional demands should resign. Dr. Agyemang stated these remarks are unfortunate and risk demoralizing staff already strained by systemic issues within Ghana’s healthcare system.
Context of the Controversy
The chairman’s comments emerged following public outcry over the death of Charles Amissah, a 29-year-old engineer. Amissah reportedly died after being denied admission by several Accra hospitals due to a lack of available beds during a medical emergency.
Mr. Nawaane’s statement came after the presentation of findings by a three-member investigative committee. This committee, led by Prof. Agyeman Badu Akosah, recommended disciplinary actions against some health workers for alleged professional misconduct in Amissah’s case.
Divergent Views on Health Worker Accountability
Dr. Agyemang clarified that the Chairman’s call for resignations does not represent the unified stance of the Parliamentary Health Committee. He asserted that the Chairman’s views, shared by some members of the majority side, are personal and not a bipartisan consensus.
