United Pension Trustees is spearheading a campaign for increased menstrual hygiene awareness and support for schoolgirls in the Juaben Municipality, advocating for an end to stigma and improved access to sanitary products. The initiative, marked by activities for Menstrual Hygiene Day, aims to combat menstrual poverty, safeguard girls’ health, dignity, and educational continuity.
The firm organized a hygiene seminar for junior high school students in collaboration with the Nkɔsuoɔhene of the Juaben Traditional Area. This event saw the donation of sanitary pads and soaps to over 2,000 girls across eight local schools, including Anglican JHS, Presbyterian JHS, SDA JHS, Methodist JHS, and STEM JHS.
Addressing Menstrual Poverty
Samira Nasiru, Head of Investment at United Pension Trustees, stated that the intervention is a key component of their corporate social responsibility, focusing on adolescent health, education, and menstrual equity. She emphasized that the project aligns with the company’s core values of inclusion, empowerment, and community development.
Nasiru highlighted that despite existing government programs, such as the free sanitary pad initiative for Senior High Schools, significant challenges remain. High costs and pervasive social stigma continue to hinder many girls from managing their menstruation with dignity, often leading to school absenteeism and dropout rates.
