Plastic Waste Chokes Bamaahu, Fueling Floods and Climate Concerns

Amada Tenga, a youth climate reporter from the Upper West Region, has highlighted the severe impact of indiscriminate plastic waste disposal in Bamaahu, a suburb of Wa, identifying it as a primary driver of environmental pollution and climate-related challenges in the community. Tenga’s observations, amplified after participating in climate change training under the Upper West Youth Climate Fellowship Programme, reveal a normalized pattern of littering that chokes drainage systems and exacerbates flooding.

Context: A Visible Environmental Crisis

Tenga, also associated with the She Leads Social Movement and as a transition guide for CAMFED, began noticing the pervasive issue after her training. She observed residents habitually discarding plastic waste, leading to accumulations in homes, markets, gutters, and open spaces.
