A special intelligence team of the Ghana Police Service successfully dismantled a robbery gang responsible for numerous violent attacks in the Upper East region during an intelligence-led operation on April 29, 2026. Four suspects were apprehended at their hideout in Zuarungu, while two others sustained fatal injuries during the operation.
Context of the Operation
The operation targeted a gang implicated in a series of high-profile robberies that had instilled fear among residents and commuters. These incidents often involved the use of firearms, resulting in injuries and significant losses for victims.
The Arrest and Recoveries
Acting on credible intelligence, police operatives raided a hideout in Zuarungu, leading to the arrest of suspects Awudu Kasim, Malik Baako, Mohammed Amidu, and Wadud Abdul. A subsequent search of the premises yielded crucial evidence.
Authorities recovered a G3 rifle loaded with 30 rounds of ammunition. This weapon was found concealed in the storage compartment of a motorbike. Police believe this motorbike was recently stolen from a victim by two other suspects, Samsudeen Mohammed and an accomplice known only as “DJ,” who are currently at large.
In addition to the firearm, seven other motorbikes, suspected to be stolen, were also recovered during the search. These vehicles are believed to have been used by the gang in their criminal activities.
Confessions and Criminal Activities
During initial interrogations, the arrested suspects reportedly confessed to their involvement in multiple robbery incidents across the Upper East region. Their admissions shed light on the extent of the gang’s operations.
Among the confessed crimes is a violent attack on February 4, 2026, along the Zuarungu–Kongo road. During this incident, a bus driver, Ussif Abdul Razak, sustained severe injuries, losing three fingers from a gunshot wound. A cargo truck driver, Mohammed Ibrahim, was also targeted in a separate attack on the same road around the same time.
The gang also admitted to a significant robbery at the Kejetia mining site in Gbane on March 28, 2026. A miner, Atani Mark, was robbed of cash and gold during this incident. The suspects’ confessions indicate involvement in other unspecified criminal activities within the region.
Fatalities and Ongoing Manhunt
The police operation was not without casualties. Two suspects, Samsudeen Mohammed and Seidu Safianu, sustained gunshot injuries during the raid and subsequently died. Their bodies have been transferred to the Police Hospital morgue for preservation and to undergo autopsy.
While four suspects are in custody and cooperating with investigators, the Ghana Police Service is intensifying efforts to apprehend the remaining accomplices. The manhunt is particularly focused on identifying and arresting “DJ,” who is believed to be a key member of the gang and is currently evading capture.
Implications and Future Outlook
The successful dismantling of this robbery gang marks a significant victory for law enforcement in the Upper East region, potentially leading to a reduction in violent crime and restoring a sense of security for residents and travelers. The recovery of firearms and stolen property is a testament to the effectiveness of intelligence-led policing.
The Ghana Police Service has assured the public that all individuals involved in criminal activities will be brought to justice. The ongoing efforts to apprehend the remaining suspects, including “DJ,” signal a commitment to eradicating organized crime in the area. The public can anticipate increased police presence and continued vigilance as investigations progress and further arrests are made.
