Power Disruptions Expected Across Four Regions Due to Planned and Emergency Maintenance

Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCo) and the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) have announced extensive power supply disruptions across four regions—Accra East, Accra West, Tema, Central, and Volta—on Wednesday, May 20, 2026. The outages stem from both scheduled critical infrastructure upgrades and necessary emergency maintenance, impacting numerous communities throughout the day.

Network Upgrades and Emergency Repairs

Engineers from GRIDCo and ECG will conduct vital maintenance and upgrade work on the power network. These activities are deemed essential for ensuring the long-term reliability and robustness of electricity distribution across the affected areas.

The planned maintenance operations are set to commence at different times, with durations varying based on the complexity of the work at each site. These exercises aim to address potential weaknesses and enhance the capacity of the power infrastructure.

Adding to the scheduled work, GRIDCo will also undertake emergency maintenance at the Aflao Bulk Supply Point. This urgent intervention highlights ongoing challenges within the power distribution system.

Specific Outage Details by Region

In the Accra East Region, a planned maintenance operation from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm will affect Dzen Ayor, Ability, Haatso Trotro Station, Agbogba Junction, and 37, along with surrounding areas. This eight-hour disruption will impact a significant transport hub within the capital.

The Accra West Region will experience a planned maintenance exercise from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm. Areas affected include Broadcasting, New Bortianor, Adanseman, Cassava Farms, Mr. Obeng, Oshieyie, and their environs.

In the Tema Region, power will be out from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm for planned maintenance. Communities such as Sackey, Bediako, High Tension, Golf City, Bright Star School, Jericho, Roman Down, Underbridge Market, State School for the Deaf, Adjei Kodjo, Kanawu, Community 22, and Michell Camp will be affected. This six-hour outage will impact several residential areas and critical educational facilities.

The Central Region faces a prolonged outage for planned maintenance from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm. A wide array of communities, including parts of Apam Junction, Apam Township, Mumford, Gomoa Dago, Ankamu Junction, Gomoa Ajumako, and numerous other Gomoa towns, will be without power.

In the Volta Region, emergency maintenance at the Aflao Bulk Supply Point is scheduled from 8:30 am to 4:00 pm. This will disrupt power to Denu, Aflao, Ave Towns, Hedzranawo, Havedzi, Kedzi, Adina, Agavedzi, Keta, Afiadenyigba, Atiteti, Tsavanya, Anlo, Nakyikope, Abor, parts of Akatsi, and Dzodze.

Context of Recent Network Faults

These scheduled interventions come in the wake of multiple unplanned network faults that occurred on Tuesday, May 19, 2026. ECG has been working to resolve these issues, which also caused significant power interruptions.

In Accra East, a fault on the Taifa Burkina Feeder disrupted supply to areas including the Taifa Police Station and Taifa Burkina. Separately, in the Tema Region, a network fault affected Doryumu, Wildlife Gate, Eastern Quarries, and surrounding communities, including Prampram Township.

Commitment to Reliability

Both GRIDCo and ECG have issued advisories acknowledging the inconvenience caused by these planned and unplanned outages. They have extended apologies to all affected customers.

The power distributors assured the public that their engineers are working diligently to resolve all network issues. They emphasized that the planned maintenance exercises are a necessary investment to ensure the long-term stability and reliability of the power network across the affected regions.

Looking Ahead

The ongoing need for both planned and emergency maintenance underscores the challenges in maintaining and upgrading Ghana’s power infrastructure. Consumers and businesses in the affected regions will need to prepare for these temporary disruptions. The frequency of such events will be a key indicator of the pace of infrastructure improvement and the overall stability of the power supply in the coming months. Attention will be on GRIDCo and ECG’s ability to execute these upgrades efficiently and minimize future unplanned outages.
