President John Dramani Mahama urged Ghanaians to actively protect the nation’s peace and reject divisive forces like extremism and intolerance during the National Eid al-Adha celebrations held at Black Star Square in Accra on Wednesday, May 27. He emphasized the timely relevance of the Eid al-Adha message in a world increasingly marred by conflict and division.
Ghana as a Beacon of Harmony
President Mahama highlighted Ghana’s distinctive status as a global example of peaceful coexistence. He pointed out that citizens from diverse religious and ethnic backgrounds have historically lived together harmoniously.
This legacy of unity, where Christians and Muslims have shared communities, schools, businesses, and even family bonds for generations, is something the President implored all Ghanaians to actively preserve and nurture.
Call for Unity and Tolerance
The President stressed the critical importance of maintaining solidarity across all religious and ethnic affiliations. He called upon citizens to embed principles of peace, tolerance, mutual understanding, and respect into their everyday interactions and conduct.
He issued a stern warning against behaviors and ideologies that could undermine national cohesion. President Mahama urged the populace to stand firm against extremism, political intolerance, and ethnic divisions, and to reject any actions that could jeopardize the country’s hard-won stability.
