The Princess of Wales, Catherine, will undertake her first official overseas engagement in over three years next week with a visit to Reggio Emilia, Italy, on May 13th and 14th. This solo trip marks a significant step in her return to public duties following a period of cancer treatment, with her last international engagement being to Boston, USA, in December 2022 alongside Prince William.
Focus on Early Childhood Education
The Princess’s visit is centered on her long-standing campaign for early childhood education. She will be “fact-finding” about the renowned Reggio Emilia approach to early years learning, a philosophy that has gained international recognition.
Kensington Palace stated that the Princess is “very much looking forward to visiting Italy next week.” She aims to “see first-hand how the Reggio Emilia approach creates environments where nature and loving human relationships come together to support children’s development.”
The Reggio Emilia approach is characterized by its emphasis on personal relationships, play-based learning, and allowing children’s natural enthusiasms to guide their educational journey.
During her two-day visit, Catherine is scheduled to meet with educators, parents, children, local representatives, and business leaders involved in the early years sector within the city.
A Milestone in Royal Return
This trip represents another key stage in Catherine’s comprehensive return to royal duties. After undergoing treatment for an undisclosed form of cancer, she announced in January that she was in remission.
The Princess has candidly spoken about experiencing “good days and bad days” during her recovery, describing the period as a “life-changing experience.” Despite these personal challenges, she has maintained a prominent presence, with opinion polls consistently ranking her among the most popular royals.
While she has made shorter trips to France and Jordan, and taken private holidays, this Italian visit is her first official engagement abroad in nearly three and a half years.
Global Dimension to Royal Foundation’s Work
The visit to Italy will lend an international dimension to the work of The Royal Foundation Centre for Early Childhood. Established in 2021, the center investigates how significant adult challenges, such as addiction and mental health issues, can often be traced back to difficulties experienced in early childhood.
Coinciding with her visit, the Centre is set to publish a new guide titled “Foundations for Life” on Wednesday. This resource is designed for professionals working with babies, young children, and their families, highlighting the crucial importance of social and emotional development.
In the foreword of the guide, which will be launched at the University of East London, Catherine writes, “The quality of our connections – with ourselves, with others and with the world around us – shapes how safe we feel, how we relate, and how we process experiences throughout our lives.”
