The Ghana Prisons Service has launched a high-level investigation following allegations that a convicted inmate at the Ankaful Maximum Security Prison played a role in the murder of the Queen Mother of the Abamba Traditional Area in the Bono East Region. The probe, initiated after preliminary findings by the Ghana Police Service, seeks to determine the extent of involvement of inmate Ishaku Alhassan, who is reportedly alleged to have acted as an intermediary in the crime.
Context of the Allegations
The tragic killing of Nana Serwaa Asaama Agyankoma I, also known as Nana Serwaa Gyan Kuma I, sent shockwaves through the Abamba Traditional Area. The Ghana Police Service’s preliminary findings pointed towards the involvement of a serving inmate, Ishaku Alhassan, leading to the current investigation by the Prisons Service.
The Prisons Service issued a statement on Saturday, May 30, expressing its condolences to the bereaved community. The statement underscored the seriousness with which the administration views these allegations.
Comprehensive Internal Investigation Underway
In response to the serious nature of the accusations, the Prisons Administration has established a “high-powered team” to conduct a thorough internal investigation. This team is tasked with uncovering the facts and recommending appropriate actions based on their findings.
The Service is actively collaborating with the Ghana Police Service in an inter-agency effort. This collaboration aims to ensure a comprehensive and transparent investigation into all aspects of the alleged murder plot and the inmate’s potential involvement.
Officials have emphasized that any individual found to have breached security regulations or facilitated criminal activities will face legal consequences, irrespective of their position within the prison system. Accountability will be strictly enforced where evidence of wrongdoing is established.
Prison Security Protocols Examined
The investigation also brings to light the existing protocols governing inmate communications and the measures in place to prevent unauthorized access to communication devices within correctional facilities.
Prisoners are permitted voice calls exclusively through supervised official prison telephone booths. Scheduled visits from approved individuals, including relatives, friends, and legal representatives, are also allowed under regulated conditions.
However, the possession or use of personal mobile phones by inmates or correctional officers on duty is strictly prohibited across all correctional facilities nationwide. This ban is a cornerstone of maintaining security and preventing illicit activities.
Measures to Prevent Contraband
The Prisons Service detailed its multi-layered security measures designed to thwart the entry and use of prohibited items, particularly electronic devices. These measures are continuously enforced to safeguard prison integrity.
Key security protocols include stringent physical and electronic searches at all entry points to prison facilities. Routine intelligence-led inspections of prison cells and workshop areas are conducted, alongside unannounced searches specifically targeting prohibited items.
Periodic random body searches of both inmates and operational staff are also carried out. These actions are part of ongoing efforts to uphold discipline and maintain a secure environment within correctional institutions.
Commitment to Public Safety and Reformation
The Ghana Prisons Service reiterated its unwavering commitment to its mandate of protecting public safety and national security. This includes ensuring the secure custody of inmates while actively pursuing rehabilitation and reformation programs.
The Service aims to balance its custodial duties with its critical work in preparing inmates for successful reintegration into society. The ongoing investigation underscores the challenges in maintaining this balance and the importance of robust security systems.
Future Watch
As the investigation progresses, the public and industry stakeholders will be closely watching for the findings and any potential reforms to security protocols. The outcome will likely influence how inmate communications are managed and monitored, and will set a precedent for accountability within the correctional system. The focus will remain on how the Prisons Service reinforces its security measures to prevent future breaches and maintain public trust.
