Raducanu’s French Open Hopes Dashed in First-Round Upset

Raducanu's French Open Hopes Dashed in First-Round Upset

Emma Raducanu’s 2024 French Open campaign ended abruptly on Tuesday with a challenging first-round defeat against Argentina’s Solana Sierra at Roland Garros. The British number one struggled to find her rhythm, ultimately falling 6-0, 7-6 (7-4) to the world number 68.

A Difficult Start on Clay

The match began disastrously for Raducanu, who conceded the first set without winning a single game in a mere 25 minutes. Her performance was marked by 15 unforced errors and zero winners in this opening set, a stark contrast to Sierra’s assertive play.

Sierra, who grew up playing on clay courts, capitalized on Raducanu’s evident unfamiliarity with the surface. She broke Raducanu’s serve in the very first game and maintained pressure throughout the set, securing a ‘bagel’ to take the lead.

Raducanu’s Second-Set Fightback

Following the disappointing first set, Raducanu took a brief break off court. She returned for the second set with renewed determination, managing to secure an early game. However, Sierra quickly re-established control, building a 4-1 lead with powerful forehand winners.

A crucial break back for Raducanu offered a glimmer of hope, and she managed to level the score at 5-5 as Sierra served for the match. The momentum shifted again as Sierra broke back immediately, but she was unable to close out the victory on her own serve, allowing a resurgent Raducanu to force a tie-break.

Tie-break Drama and Defeat

The tie-break proved to be a tense affair. Raducanu fought back from a significant deficit, clawing her way from 5-1 down to 5-4. However, her resistance ultimately faltered, and Sierra regrouped to secure the match after one hour and 45 minutes of play.

Season Disrupted by Health Issues

Raducanu’s 2024 season has been significantly impacted by a post-viral illness. This condition kept her away from the WTA Tour for over two months following the Indian Wells tournament in March.

Her preparation for the French Open was far from ideal. Her only prior match on clay this season was a first-round loss at the Strasbourg Open earlier in the week, highlighting her limited recent experience on the red dirt.

Injury Woes and Coaching Changes

Since her remarkable US Open triumph in 2021, Raducanu has been plagued by a series of illnesses and injuries. This has limited her ability to consistently compete at the highest level, with her only major performance beyond the third round being at Flushing Meadows.

In a bid to recapture her previous form, Raducanu has recently re-hired coach Andrew Richardson. Richardson was instrumental in guiding her to her historic US Open title as a teenage qualifier.

Looking Ahead: The Grass Court Season

With her French Open journey concluded, Raducanu’s focus will now shift to the upcoming grass-court season. This transition marks a return to the surface where she achieved her greatest career success.

Meanwhile, Solana Sierra advances to the second round, where she is scheduled to face either Italy’s 13th seed Jasmine Paolini or Ukraine’s Dayana Yastremska.
