Sagnarigu, Northern Region – The Sagnarigu Municipal Assembly has unveiled four newly developed modern markets, complete with essential ancillary facilities, aimed at revitalizing the local economy and enhancing trade within the municipality. These projects were highlighted during the Assembly’s recent “Accounting to the People” forum, underscoring a commitment to socio-economic development.
Boosting Local Commerce
Municipal Chief Executive Abdulai Imoro Gong detailed the market infrastructure developments during the forum. The projects include the construction of commercial sheds, lockable stores, and comprehensive market facilities. These amenities are designed to support commercial activities and improve the trading environment for local vendors.
Specific upgrades include the completion of 24 lockable stores and a 20-seater water closet toilet facility under the Ghana Secondary Cities Support Programme. These efforts aim to provide secure and adequate spaces for businesses to operate and thrive.
Key Market Developments
A significant development is the two-storey commercial facility at Jisonayili. This structure houses 22 lockable stores, a Police post for security, a crèche, a clinic, and 72 additional stalls. The rehabilitation of washrooms further enhances the market’s functionality.
The Kalpohin Market has also seen substantial upgrades. The Assembly completed the construction of 24 stalls and a 14-seater washroom facility. Additionally, paved lorry and car parks, along with a two-storey facility featuring 40 lockable stores, have been added to improve logistics and commercial capacity.
A dedicated livestock market and loading ramp have also been constructed. This initiative is expected to streamline livestock trading and transportation, a crucial economic activity in the region.
Broader Development Initiatives
Beyond market development, the Sagnarigu Municipal Assembly has pursued a multi-sectoral approach to improving residents’ living conditions. In healthcare, seven health infrastructure projects have been completed, increasing access to primary healthcare services.
The education sector has also benefited from eight new infrastructure projects and the provision of 1,600 dual desks to local schools, enhancing teaching and learning conditions.
Support for Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) is another key focus. The Assembly has assisted 163 PWDs with business development, healthcare, and educational support, aiming to improve their livelihoods and integration into the community.
Infrastructure and Sanitation Improvements
In the water and sanitation sector, 10 boreholes have been drilled for mechanization, and six others were rehabilitated. Approximately 2,000 meters of pipelines were laid to improve pipe-borne water supply to various communities.
Sanitation efforts include the evacuation of refuse from 11 sites and the introduction of a pay-as-you-dump waste management system. These measures are intended to improve overall sanitation and public health within the municipality.
Road infrastructure has seen significant progress, with 51 kilometers of roads under construction and 11 kilometers surfaced with bitumen. This aims to improve transportation networks and accessibility for residents and businesses.
To mitigate flooding, about two kilometers of storm drains have been constructed, and several existing drains have been desilted and dredged.
Skills Development and Entrepreneurship
The Assembly has also prioritized skills development and entrepreneurship. A total of 751 beneficiaries have graduated and received start-up kits to support their ventures, fostering youth employment and economic empowerment.
Regional Recognition
Northern Regional Minister Ali Adolf John commended the Sagnarigu Municipal Assembly for its commitment to accountability and the successful implementation of impactful projects. He reiterated the government’s dedication to strengthening participatory governance and ensuring inclusive development across the nation.
Looking Ahead
The completion and inauguration of these modern markets and associated infrastructure signal a significant step forward for Sagnarigu’s economic landscape. The focus now shifts to how effectively these facilities will be utilized by traders and the community, and what ripple effects they will have on local employment and economic diversification. Continued monitoring and evaluation of these projects will be crucial in assessing their long-term impact and identifying any further needs for development and support within the municipality.
