SanlamAllianz Life Insurance has provided a significant boost to four elite Ghanaian athletes, sponsoring their participation in the upcoming 2026 Cape Town Marathon. The sponsorship, announced ahead of the athletes’ departure from Accra on Thursday, covers their journey to compete in the prestigious 42.2-kilometre race in South Africa on May 23 and 24.
Ghanaian Elite Athletes Secure Marathon Opportunity
The sponsored athletes are Koogo Atia, Seidu Salifu, Richard Kweitu, and Kwabena Frimpong. Their selection for this international event was earned by finishing as the top four competitors at the Absa Black Star Marathon, an achievement that secured Ghana’s representation in the renowned Cape Town event.
SanlamAllianz’s Commitment to Community and Talent
The farewell ceremony, held in Accra, marked a moment of encouragement from SanlamAllianz Life Insurance Ghana Limited’s Country Lead, Tawiah Ben-Ahmed. He urged the athletes to perform with pride and represent Ghana and the sponsoring company on the global stage. Ben-Ahmed highlighted the athletes’ excitement and gratitude for the unexpected support, emphasizing the company’s role in nurturing such opportunities.
“We found them befitting of sponsorship for the Sanlam Cape Marathon and, with this opportunity, we expect that they will first represent themselves well and, secondly, represent SanlamAllianz well and, most importantly, represent Ghana well,” stated Ben-Ahmed. He further encouraged them to be “great ambassadors of Ghana” and return with achievements.
Mabel Porbley, Managing Director of SanlamAllianz General Insurance Ghana LTD, elaborated on the company’s philosophy behind the sponsorship. She stressed that SanlamAllianz views itself as an integral part of the communities where it operates, going beyond mere profitability to actively engage and support local initiatives.
“For us at Sanlam, we believe that we do not only work in countries, we work in communities, and so we support the communities,” Porbley explained. “Playing is part of how we engage, and so this marathon is the playing part of what we do. We are sponsoring this not because we knew them, but because it is something that we do as a business in supporting opportunities.”
Cape Town Marathon: A Global Stage
The 2026 Sanlam Cape Town Marathon is set to be a significant event, attracting elite runners from around the world. This year’s edition will also notably feature legendary Kenyan runner Eliud Kipchoge as part of his global “Eliud’s Running World” tour, adding further prestige to the marathon.
Implications for Ghanaian Athletics and Beyond
This sponsorship by SanlamAllianz represents a crucial investment in Ghanaian athletics, providing a platform for emerging talent to compete at an international level. Such support can inspire other aspiring athletes and encourage greater private sector involvement in sports development within Ghana.
For the sponsored athletes, this is a life-changing opportunity to test their mettle against some of the world’s best runners. Their performance in Cape Town could open doors to future sponsorships, professional opportunities, and national recognition.
The involvement of a major insurance provider like SanlamAllianz underscores a growing trend of corporate social responsibility extending into sports, recognizing its power to unite communities and promote healthy lifestyles. The success of these athletes could also enhance Ghana’s profile in international marathon circuits.
Looking ahead, the performance of Atia, Salifu, Kweitu, and Frimpong will be closely watched. Their journey is a testament to the potential within Ghanaian sports and the impact of strategic corporate partnerships. The continued engagement of companies like SanlamAllianz will be key to fostering sustained growth and success in Ghanaian athletics.
