Sprinter Ibrahim Fuseini Misses World Athletics Relays Due to Travel Mishaps

Ghanaian sprinter Ibrahim Fuseini was unable to compete in the recent World Athletics Relays in Botswana due to a series of travel complications, including missing a flight and facing visa issues. Fuseini was slated to join Ghana’s men’s 4x100m relay team for the event, which concluded recently in Botswana.

Travel Woes Detail

Fuseini detailed his frustrating experience in an exclusive interview, explaining that he missed his initial flight on April 28 after arriving at the airport just six minutes past the check-in deadline. This resulted in him being denied boarding for that flight.

A subsequent travel arrangement was made for Fuseini, with Gaborone, Botswana, as his final destination. However, this second attempt to travel was also thwarted when airline officials refused to issue his boarding pass.

The airline’s reasoning was that Fuseini required a visa to enter Botswana, despite him presenting a Ghanaian passport. Fuseini asserted that as a Ghanaian citizen, he should not need a visa for Botswana, especially since Gaborone was his final destination.

Intervention and Refusal

To support his claim, Fuseini presented documentation, including his U.S. student visa and an I-20 form, to prove his legal status and travel eligibility. Despite these efforts and interventions from both the Ghana Athletics Federation and the Local Organizing Committee (LOC) in Gaborone, the airline remained resolute in its decision.
