Structural Engineer Cautions Permit Audit Alone Won't Solve Ghana's Unsafe Building Crisis

Accra, Ghana – June 8, 2024 – The Executive Secretary of the Structural Sub-Division of the Ghana Institution of Engineering, Ing. Prince Kas-Avortri, has lauded the government’s planned audit of building permits issued by Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) as a positive initial step. However, speaking on Joy FM’s Top Story on Monday, he cautioned that this audit, while important, is insufficient to address the pervasive issue of unsafe construction practices, including unauthorized building and lax enforcement of planning regulations.

Broader Regulatory Challenges

Ing. Kas-Avortri highlighted that the problem of unsafe structures extends beyond merely the issuance of permits. His concern is that many buildings are erected without the necessary approvals and structural designs, posing significant safety risks to occupants and the public.
