Takoradi Technical University (TTU) was crowned the Overall Best Technical University Innovator at the 4th Applied Research Conference of Technical Universities of Ghana (ARCTUG 2026), solidifying its standing in research and applied knowledge generation. The host institution secured the top spot after excelling across multiple innovation and research categories during the conference, which concluded on Friday, May 29, 2026, in Takoradi.
Context and Previous Recognition
This significant achievement follows TTU’s recent ranking as the top technical university in Ghana by the AD Scientific Index for the third consecutive year. This consistent recognition underscores the university’s strong performance in research productivity and scientific impact.
ARCTUG 2026 Highlights
The ARCTUG 2026 conference, themed “Strengthening Applied Research and Innovation for Sustainable Development,” convened vice-chancellors, researchers, industry leaders, and policymakers from Ghana’s ten technical universities. The event aimed to showcase innovative solutions to contemporary development challenges and foster collaboration.
The awards ceremony, held at the Essipong Grove Resort, saw Cape Coast Technical University securing the second position and Ho Technical University taking third place overall. The conference provided a vital platform for technical universities to promote applied research, entrepreneurship, and technology transfer.
Individual and Institutional Excellence
TTU’s success was further highlighted by individual accolades. Dr. Aba Atta Eyison received an award for Agriculture, Applied Sciences, and Sustainable Innovation. Francis Bukari and Fuseini Harawi were recognized in Artificial Intelligence, Digital Transformation, and Inclusive Education in TVET. Prof. Bruce Amartey won in the Creative Arts, Tourism, and Cultural Industries for Sustainability category.
The Vice-Chancellor of TTU, Rev. Prof. John Frank Eshun, attributed the university’s success to sustained investment in research, innovation, industry collaboration, and staff development. He emphasized TTU’s commitment to advancing practical, solution-oriented research.
Industry-Academia Collaboration
A key theme resonating throughout the event was the perceived gap between academic learning and industry demands. Ing. Justice Amoh, CEO of Justmoh Construction Company and Co-Chairman of the Dinner and Awards Night, pointed out that while graduates often perform well in interviews, they sometimes struggle with real-world, hands-on tasks.
He urged technical universities to enhance their curricula and training to ensure graduates possess the practical competencies essential for the modern workplace and to support Ghana’s industrialization agenda. This call for closer ties between academia and industry was echoed by the Chairman of the Vice-Chancellors of Technical Universities-Ghana (VCTU-G), Ing. Prof. Kwadwo Adinkrah-Appiah.
Future Implications
TTU’s dual achievement of hosting ARCTUG 2026 and winning the Overall Best Innovator award positions it as a leader in applied research and technological advancement within Ghana’s technical university sector. The conference’s focus on sustainable development and the highlighted need for industry-relevant skills suggest a future where technical universities will play an increasingly crucial role in driving national economic growth and innovation. Stakeholders will be watching how other institutions adopt TTU’s model of integrating research with practical application and strengthening industry partnerships to meet evolving workforce demands.
