Telecel Ghana has commenced a nationwide network infrastructure expansion program, beginning with significant upgrades at its Madina Social Welfare mast. This initiative aims to enhance service quality, boost capacity, and deliver faster, more reliable internet and voice services to customers across Ghana, marking a substantial investment in the country’s digital infrastructure.
Context of the Expansion
The expansion drive follows a commitment made by Telecel Ghana’s CEO, Ing. Patricia Obo-Nai, in March, who promised major network improvements in the second quarter of the year. This initiative addresses the growing demand for mobile data and aims to future-proof the network for emerging digital services.
Upgrading Network Capacity and Speed
Director of Technology, Ebenezer Siebu, highlighted the deployment of advanced technologies to increase network capacity and alleviate congestion in high-traffic areas. “We are building extra capacity on this site to reduce congestion and increase internet speeds for thousands of customers in Madina,” Siebu stated.
He further explained, “As data usage continues to grow, these investments ensure our customers enjoy faster speeds, better voice quality and consistently stronger connections.” This year, Telecel plans to roll out similar technology upgrades to over 100 busy sites, with more than 1,000 sites nationwide receiving various levels of enhancement.
Commitment to Safety and Community Value
Telecel Ghana’s Health and Safety team was present during the initial installation in Madina, emphasizing strict adherence to operational standards and safe work practices among engineers and contractors. This underscores the company’s commitment to responsible infrastructure development.
Head of Networks, Anthony Sam, emphasized the broader impact of these investments: “At Telecel, we connect energies, which means improving connectivity so our customers can enjoy the value.” He added that the company approaches the expansion with “passion, commitment and purpose.”
Customer Excitement and Network Growth
Residents in Madina expressed enthusiasm for the visible improvements. Adiza, a local resident, shared her anticipation: “I use Telecel every day to watch videos on social media, so I am excited to see them improving the network here in Madina. I can’t wait.”
Since its rebranding to Telecel Ghana, the company has significantly expanded its network footprint, growing from approximately 5,000 to about 9,000 sites. This expansion is part of one of the most ambitious capacity enhancement programs in the industry.
Future-Ready Infrastructure
The ongoing work, involving engineers installing and calibrating new equipment, signifies Telecel Ghana’s strategic push to build a robust and future-ready network. This investment is designed to meet the evolving digital needs of millions of customers and support future technological advancements.
Looking Ahead
The successful rollout of this nationwide expansion will be crucial for Telecel Ghana’s competitive positioning and its ability to offer advanced digital services. Customers can expect to see tangible improvements in network performance, with ongoing upgrades planned throughout the year. The industry will be watching to see how these enhancements impact customer satisfaction and market share, as Telecel aims to solidify its commitment to providing superior connectivity across Ghana.
