Operatives of the National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) apprehended three Chinese nationals on Thursday, May 14, 2026, during a riverine operation targeting illicit mining activities along the Tano River in the Amenfi West District. The swift action, conducted between 0300hrs and 1530hrs, aimed to curb the widespread environmental degradation caused by these illegal operations.
Context of the Operation
The operation was a collaborative effort between the NAIMOS task force and the Blue Water Guards, forming part of ongoing initiatives to cleanse the Tano River of illegal mining. For months, authorities have been battling entrenched illegal mining syndicates that exploit the river’s resources, causing significant ecological damage.
On-Site Discoveries and Arrests
During patrols along several riverbank communities, officials observed that some previously targeted areas were now clear of illegal mining. However, the situation dramatically changed upon reaching Oforikrom.
There, the task force encountered miners actively operating Changfan machines mounted on floating platforms directly in the river. Upon the security personnel’s approach, many illegal miners scattered, abandoning their equipment.
A subsequent search of the site led to the capture of three Chinese nationals. Authorities identified the arrested individuals as Deng Jun, 37; Deng Bi Hua, 50; and Deng Bi Qiang, 32. They were reportedly overseeing the mining operations at the location.
Environmental Devastation Uncovered
Initial inspections at the Oforikrom site revealed the severe environmental toll of the illegal mining. Officials documented extensive pollution of the Tano River, a critical water source for surrounding communities.
Furthermore, the mining activities had resulted in significant destruction to nearby farmlands. The depth of the river itself had been drastically reduced due to the continuous dredging and excavation.
Seizures and Dismantling of Equipment
Beyond the arrests, the operation yielded substantial seizures. The task force confiscated one pump-action gun with twelve cartridges, and a Toyota Hilux pickup truck bearing the registration number GS 5288-22.
In line with operational protocols, over 20 Changfan machines mounted on floating platforms were dismantled and destroyed. Several associated pipelines and makeshift structures used for the illicit operations were also removed.
NAIMOS Commitment and Warning
NAIMOS reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to eradicating illegal mining activities, particularly along the nation’s vital water bodies. The Secretariat is intensifying its efforts across the country.
The Secretariat issued a stern warning to all individuals engaged in illegal mining. They are strongly advised to consider participating in the responsible cooperative mining programs established by the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources. Failure to comply will result in the confiscation of equipment and prosecution.
Looking Ahead
The successful operation and subsequent arrests signal a renewed determination by authorities to combat illegal mining. The focus now shifts to sustained enforcement and the effective implementation of alternative livelihood programs for affected communities. Observers will be watching to see if these efforts can lead to a long-term reversal of the environmental damage and a reduction in illicit mining activities along the Tano River and other water bodies.
