MPASATIA, GHANA – A 19-year-old man is dead after being severely beaten by residents of Mpasatia in the Atwima Mponua District of the Ashanti Region on Wednesday, June 3, 2026. The deceased was allegedly involved in an attempted theft of a motorized tricycle, commonly known as an ‘aboboyaa’.
The incident unfolded in the early hours of Wednesday morning, around 4:00 a.m., when the owner of the tricycle spotted several individuals attempting to steal his vehicle. The owner raised an alarm, alerting nearby community members.
According to Mpasatia Assembly Member Karim Salifu, the deceased was apprehended along with two other suspects. While fleeing with the tricycle, one of the suspects reportedly fell, leading to the group being overtaken by a chase from residents.
Mr. Salifu stated that he arrived at the scene approximately two and a half hours later, around 6:30 a.m. He found the young man still alive but in critical condition. The victim succumbed to his injuries shortly thereafter.
The Mpasatia Police Command was notified of the incident. Officers transported the body to the morgue at Frimpong Boateng Hospital for preservation and to undergo a post-mortem examination. The police have initiated an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death.
As of the time of reporting, no arrests have been made in connection with the alleged mob action. The police are expected to investigate both the alleged theft of the aboboyaa and the subsequent mob attack.
Mob justice remains a persistent issue in various regions of Ghana. Security agencies consistently implore the public to refrain from vigilantism and instead hand over suspects to law enforcement authorities for due process.
