Two individuals were fatally shot in Nanyuki, Kenya, on Monday during protests against the United States’ plan to establish an Ebola isolation center at a nearby military base. One victim, identified as Charles Mang’aro Mwangi, was reportedly shot near the Laikipia Airbase while going about his daily activities, not participating in the demonstration. The circumstances surrounding the deaths remain unclear, with officials offering no immediate comment and police initially denying knowledge of any fatalities.
Context of the Controversy
The proposed 50-bed isolation facility is intended to treat American citizens who may contract Ebola in the ongoing outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo. US officials stated Kenya was chosen for its proximity and to ensure timely treatment for Americans. The plan has ignited public apprehension regarding potential cross-border infection risks, despite Kenya having no reported Ebola cases.
Protests and Fatalities
Hundreds of demonstrators took to the streets of Nanyuki, located approximately 140 km north of Nairobi, on Monday. Protesters blocked roads and burned tires, prompting police to deploy tear gas to disperse the crowds. One of the deceased, Charles Mang’aro Mwangi, a 27-year-old, was reportedly shot around 6 PM while on his way to visit a friend after work. His mother, Joyce Wangari, stated he was not involved in the protests and was simply on the road when he was shot. She reported no communication from the police regarding his death.
The second victim was reportedly dead upon arrival at the local hospital, brought in by soldiers. Both bodies, currently in the hospital morgue, appear to have sustained gunshot wounds. The town was reportedly calm on Tuesday morning, with a significant security presence observed.
