The United States government has donated three high-value Freightliner heavy-duty trucks to the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) to bolster their engineering, construction, and humanitarian response capacities. The official handover ceremony took place on Thursday at the Ghana Armed Forces Engineers Training School (ETS) near the 48 Engineers Regiment Camp in Teshie, marking a significant enhancement to the GAF’s operational capabilities.
Strengthening Partnership and Capacity
Rolf Olson, Chargé d’Affaires at the United States Embassy in Ghana, presented the trucks, collectively valued at over $600,000, emphasizing the donation as a symbol of the enduring partnership between the U.S. and Ghana. Each truck is valued at approximately $214,000.
These heavy-duty vehicles are crucial for transporting essential engineering equipment, such as road graders, backhoes, and front-end loaders, to various project sites across Ghana. This logistical support is vital for the GAF’s multifaceted role in national development and disaster relief.
GAF’s Expanding Role in National Development
Mr. Olson highlighted the Ghana Armed Forces’ critical contributions beyond national defense. He cited their involvement in significant infrastructure projects like the Accra-Kumasi Expressway and the ongoing Burma Camp regeneration project. The military engineers also play a key role in constructing forward operating bases, essential for national security.
Furthermore, the GAF is increasingly engaged in humanitarian interventions and environmental restoration efforts. This includes reclamation of degraded lands and rehabilitation of water bodies impacted by illegal mining activities, showcasing a broadened mandate for the armed forces.

Lieutenant Colonel Ampadu-Banasco, Commanding Officer of the GAF Engineers Training School, expressed gratitude for the donation, noting that the United States has been a consistent supporter of the institution. Previous assistance included engineering equipment and specialized training for instructors and operators.
The need for these trucks arose from practical challenges faced during training exercises. The school experienced difficulties in transporting heavy engineering equipment to remote training locations. This donation directly addresses those logistical hurdles.
The Engineers Training School recently launched its first Basic Heavy Engineering Equipment Course, with graduates already contributing to major national projects like the Accra-Kumasi Expressway as plant operators. The new trucks will significantly enhance the practical training components of these courses.

Ernest Brogya Genfi, the Minister of Defence, lauded the donation as particularly timely. He pointed out the expanding responsibilities of the GAF in national development and emergency response operations, underscoring the importance of robust logistical support.
