US-Iran Ceasefire Hanging by a Thread as Tehran Submits Counteroffer

President Donald Trump declared on Monday that the month-old ceasefire between the United States and Iran is in a state of “massive life support,” describing it as “unbelievably weak.” This statement followed Iran’s submission of a counteroffer on Sunday detailing its demands to end the conflict and reopen the Strait of Hormuz, a proposal Trump swiftly rejected as “totally unacceptable” and “a piece of garbage.” The fragile truce has been strained by continued exchanges of fire despite its official observance since April.

Context of the Standoff

The current tensions stem from massive air strikes launched by Israeli and US forces against Iran on February 28th. A subsequent ceasefire was established last month, offering a brief respite from escalating hostilities. However, underlying disputes over Iran’s nuclear program, its influence in the region, and control over vital maritime passages like the Strait of Hormuz continue to fuel mistrust.

The Strait of Hormuz is a critical chokepoint for global energy markets, with approximately 20% of the world’s oil and liquefied natural gas typically passing through it. Iran’s continued obstruction of this passage has contributed to a rise in world oil prices. In response, the US has implemented a blockade of Iranian ports, a move that has intensified anger in Tehran.

Iran’s Demands and US Rejection

Iran’s foreign ministry spokesperson, Esmail Baghaei, characterized Tehran’s proposals as “responsible” and “generous.” According to Iran’s semi-official Tasnim news agency, the offer includes an immediate cessation of hostilities on all fronts, a reference to ongoing Israeli attacks against Iran-backed Hezbollah in Lebanon. It also calls for the lifting of the US naval blockade on Iranian ports and guarantees against further attacks on Iran.

Furthermore, reports suggest Iran is seeking compensation for war damages and is asserting its sovereignty over the Strait of Hormuz. Trump publicly dismissed these demands on his social media platform, Truth Social, stating he “don’t like it – TOTALLY UNACCEPTABLE.” He later elaborated in the Oval Office, comparing the ceasefire’s chances of survival to a patient with a “1 per cent chance of living.”
