Usyk Retains Heavyweight Titles in Controversial Stoppage Against Kickboxing Champion Verhoeven

Oleksandr Usyk controversially retained his world heavyweight titles in an 11th-round stoppage against kickboxing legend Rico Verhoeven in Egypt on Saturday night. Verhoeven, making only his second professional boxing appearance, proved a surprisingly tough opponent, even stunning the Ukrainian champion at times. The fight was halted with scorecards showing a tight contest, leading to widespread debate over the referee’s decision.

A Stunned Champion Faces an Unlikely Challenger

In a bout many anticipated would highlight a significant skill gap, the undefeated Usyk, a three-time undisputed champion, appeared uncharacteristically laboured against the 37-year-old Verhoeven. The 39-year-old Ukrainian secured his 25th professional win, but the victory was overshadowed by his opponent’s strong performance and vocal questioning of the stoppage.

Verhoeven, a dominant figure in kickboxing for over 4,000 days, entered the ring clad as a gladiator, while Usyk sported a similar theme with a golden helmet. The unique setting, an open-air arena at the foot of the Pyramids of Giza, provided a dramatic backdrop for one of boxing’s more unusual world title fights.

Verhoeven’s Bold Performance Challenges Boxing Norms

From the outset, Verhoeven displayed remarkable energy and movement, landing effective body shots and challenging Usyk in a way few expected. In the third round, a solid right hand from the challenger landed flush, forcing Usyk to dig deep. Though Usyk responded in the fourth, hurting Verhoeven with a straight right and left, the kickboxing champion absorbed the blows and continued to press.

Verhoeven, whose previous boxing outing ended quickly, reached the sixth round for the first time in his professional boxing career. He heeded his trainer Peter Fury’s advice to focus on his boxing, and in the eighth round, rocked Usyk again with a right hand. This unexpected resilience from Verhoeven led many observers to believe the fight was closer than the eventual outcome suggested.

A Controversial Stoppage and Lingering Questions

The tide appeared to turn in the 10th and 11th rounds as Usyk found his rhythm, unleashing a flurry of punches and repeatedly landing the uppercut that had proven most effective. Verhoeven was knocked down by an uppercut and, after beating the count, was caught by a follow-up barrage. The referee stepped in to stop the fight in the final seconds of the 11th round.

At the time of the stoppage, the judges’ scorecards read 95-95, 95-95, and 96-94 in favour of Verhoeven, adding to the controversy. Verhoeven himself called it an “early stoppage,” expressing a desire to continue or go the distance. “I wanted the referee to let me go out on my shield or let me go in the 12th. I felt we were pretty even on the scorecards,” he stated.

Usyk acknowledged the difficulty of the fight, stating, “This fight was hard. It was a good fight.” However, the decision has drawn criticism from boxing fans and analysts, many of whom felt Verhoeven deserved the chance to finish the fight or go to the scorecards.

Implications for Usyk and the Heavyweight Division

The bout was sanctioned for Usyk’s WBC title and WBA ‘super’ belt, though Verhoeven was ineligible for the latter. The IBF also granted permission but did not sanction its belt. The result, while a win for Usyk, has undeniably impacted his standing. His performance was uncharacteristically vulnerable, and the controversial nature of the stoppage has led to calls for a rematch.

Verhoeven emerged from the fight with significant credit, proving he could compete at a world-class level against an elite boxer. His performance mirrors that of MMA fighter Francis Ngannou, who also gave a strong account of himself against Tyson Fury before a subsequent loss. This crossover success, even in defeat, raises questions about the boundaries between different combat sports.

What’s Next for the Heavyweight Champion?

Following the fight, Agit Kabayel, the mandatory challenger for Usyk’s WBC title, entered the ring to stake his claim. Kabayel expressed his readiness and desire to fight in Germany. Usyk responded positively, indicating his willingness to face Kabayel, suggesting he may have only two more fights remaining in his career.

The debate over a potential rematch with Verhoeven is likely to intensify. Usyk’s performance, coupled with the contentious stoppage, has opened the door for further discussion about the legitimacy of the result and the future landscape of the heavyweight division. The focus now shifts to whether Usyk will grant Verhoeven a rematch or proceed with his mandatory obligations.
