Vice President Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang visited victims of a significant fire outbreak at the Accra Central Market and the adjacent Accra Central Police Barracks Annex on Friday, June 5. She provided much-needed relief items and pledged government assistance to those affected by the blaze, which occurred on June 3.
Assessing the Damage and Preventing Future Incidents
The inferno, which engulfed parts of the Tudu enclave near the Accra Regional Police Headquarters, caused extensive destruction. Thirty-two rooms at the police barracks annex were destroyed, and numerous market stalls were consumed by the flames. This has left dozens of families and traders displaced and facing significant losses.
During her on-site inspection, Vice President Opoku-Agyemang emphasized the urgent need for a comprehensive assessment of the damage. She directed authorities to identify structural and systemic vulnerabilities that might have contributed to the fire.
“A detailed evaluation is crucial to inform measures aimed at preventing similar disasters in the future,” the Vice President stated, highlighting the importance of learning from the incident to enhance safety protocols.
Immediate Relief and Support Measures
In response to the immediate needs of the victims, Professor Opoku-Agyemang presented a significant donation of assorted relief items. These included 100 mattresses, 300 blankets, 300 mosquito nets, 30 cartons of cooking oil, and clothing.
Further support was announced during the visit. The Ministry of the Interior, in collaboration with the Ghana Police Service, provided GH₵15,000 in immediate cash assistance to each affected family residing at the police barracks annex.
Vice President Opoku-Agyemang also instructed officials from the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) to prioritize the procurement of locally manufactured goods for distribution to the victims. This directive aims to support local industries while providing essential supplies.
