Weija-Gbawe MP Calls for Urgent Flood Relief Amidst Weija Dam Spillage Crisis

Jerry Ahmed Shaib, the Member of Parliament for Weija-Gbawe, has issued an urgent plea for state intervention to aid residents displaced by severe flooding. The crisis, triggered by the controlled spillage of excess water from the Weija Dam, has inundated downstream communities, forcing many families from their homes as floodwaters continue to rise. The MP described the situation as a humanitarian crisis and appealed directly to the National Anti-Flood Task Force for immediate assistance to affected families, emphasizing that the need for support transcends political affiliations.

Humanitarian Crisis Unfolds Downstream

Communities such as Tetegu, Oblogo, and parts of Weija are currently submerged, with schools and businesses forced to close. Residents are navigating knee-deep to waist-high waters, desperately attempting to salvage belongings like furniture, mattresses, and food supplies. In some areas, access is now only possible by canoe, highlighting the severity of the inundation.

Mr. Shaib visited the affected areas, underscoring the urgency of the situation. “This is not partisan,” he stated, emphasizing that the affected residents include individuals who may have voted for the current government. His appeal focuses on immediate evacuation, support for displaced families, and provision of daily stipends for survival.

Dam Operations and Rainfall Intensity

The Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) has confirmed that the controlled spillage is a necessary measure to maintain the dam’s integrity. The company indicated that the spillage will continue until water levels return to a safe operating level. GWCL has advised residents in downstream communities to evacuate vulnerable areas promptly to safeguard lives and property.

Speculation suggests that unexpected rainfall intensity, possibly originating from the Nsawam Adoagyiri area, contributed to the high water levels, necessitating the dam spillage. Mr. Shaib noted that monitoring might have underestimated the rainfall’s magnitude, leading to the current pressure on the dam.

Residents Face Devastation and Uncertainty

Fear and uncertainty grip the affected communities as heavy rains persist and water levels show no immediate sign of receding. Residents report floodwaters reaching window levels in some homes, forcing them to move possessions to higher floors or seek temporary shelter elsewhere. The constant sound of rushing water from drains and the Densu River amplifies the anxiety.

Kofi Darko, a resident, estimates that approximately 5,000 people have been displaced. He observed the water levels rising rapidly, stating, “I have been living here for the past five years and now we are worried that more water, excess water, there’s excess spillage of water from the dam and we’re scared that the area is going to get more flooded.”

Another resident, Nana Yaw Okyere, who is not a resident but is assisting with salvage efforts, described the scene. Many have moved belongings to multi-story buildings, while others are unable to commute to work. The MP’s intervention, providing food and assistance, has been crucial for those stranded.

One resident, whose room was inaccessible due to flooding, expressed gratitude for the MP’s timely aid. “Since yesterday it has rained and I can’t enter my room. I have stood outside without eating. Right now, it is MP who came and brought us food and is telling us to follow him. God bless him.” The difficult conditions underscore the immediate need for organized relief efforts.

Looking Ahead: Persistent Rain and Future Risks

With the rainy season ongoing in Accra, the situation remains precarious. Residents fear further deterioration if the dam spillage continues and rainfall intensifies. The recurring nature of such floods in downstream communities raises questions about long-term urban planning, infrastructure resilience, and early warning systems. The immediate focus remains on providing relief and ensuring the safety of affected populations, but the event highlights the vulnerability of these areas to climate-related challenges and the need for proactive mitigation strategies.
