Accra, Ghana – June 3, 2026 – The 2026 West African Mining and Power Expo (WAMPEX) officially opened in Accra today with a strong call from Ghana’s Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, for West African nations to harness responsible mining practices and dependable energy infrastructure to fuel industrial growth, create jobs, and achieve sustainable development across the sub-region.
Context: A Region Rich in Resources, Poised for Transformation
West Africa stands at a critical juncture, endowed with significant mineral wealth including gold, bauxite, iron ore, diamonds, manganese, and lithium. This abundance, coupled with a surging global demand for critical minerals essential for green technologies and modern manufacturing, presents a unique opportunity for the region. However, realizing this potential requires strategic integration of resource management, industrial policy, and energy development.
Mining for Value, Not Just Extraction
Minister Buah emphasized Ghana’s commitment to a paradigm shift in its mining sector, moving from a purely resource-extraction model to a value-driven economy. This new approach prioritizes how mining contributes to broader national objectives.
