Women in Mining Ghana (WIM Ghana), in collaboration with Sista Wings International and support from AngloGold Ashanti, launched the ‘One Girl Child, Two Sanitary Pads Initiative’ at Nyigbenya D/A Basic A and B Schools in Ningo Prampram. The event, held to mark Menstrual Hygiene Day 2026, focused on educating and empowering young girls through crucial awareness on menstrual hygiene, reproductive health, personal hygiene, and career prospects in the extractive sector.
Context: Addressing Barriers to Education and Well-being
The initiative stems from WIM Ghana’s broader commitment to enhancing the dignity, education, and empowerment of women and girls in their communities. Menstrual hygiene management remains a significant challenge for many girls, often leading to missed school days and impacting their overall well-being and educational attainment. This program seeks to dismantle these barriers by providing essential resources and knowledge.
Empowering Through Education and Resources
The outreach program facilitated an interactive session for students, teachers, facilitators, and volunteers, creating a safe environment for open dialogue. Discussions covered menstrual health, puberty, personal development, and future aspirations. Facilitators provided comprehensive education on menstrual hygiene practices, self-care, and navigating the physical and emotional changes of puberty.
A key component of the event was career guidance, introducing the young girls to the diverse opportunities available within the mining and extractive industries. This included fields such as mining engineering, geology, environmental management, occupational health and safety, community relations, and leadership roles. Speakers urged the students to prioritize their education and confidently pursue careers in these traditionally male-dominated sectors.
Tangible Support and Future Aspirations
To directly address menstrual hygiene needs and reduce school absenteeism, sanitary pads were distributed to the participating girls. WIM Ghana representatives highlighted that access to education, mentorship, and menstrual hygiene support are fundamental pillars for fostering gender equality, leadership development, and overall community progress.
The organization reiterated its dedication to creating pathways and opportunities for women and girls, both within the broader society and specifically within the extractive sector. Appreciation was extended to AngloGold Ashanti for their vital support and to Sista Wings International for their collaborative partnership in ensuring the program’s success.
