Addis Ababa, Ethiopia – African policymakers, environmental experts, and youth groups convened in Addis Ababa to advocate for the urgent establishment of deforestation-free value chains in Ethiopia. This initiative aims to balance economic growth with environmental stewardship and adapt to evolving global trade regulations, particularly the European Union Deforestation Regulation (EUDR).
Context: Global Pressures and African Opportunities
Countries across Africa are increasingly facing pressure to align their economic development strategies with international environmental standards. The EUDR, which came into effect in June 2023, requires companies to ensure that products sold in the EU are deforestation-free and produced in accordance with the relevant laws of the country of production.
This presents both a challenge and a significant opportunity for African nations. By adopting sustainable practices and enhancing traceability, countries can gain preferential access to lucrative green markets while fostering domestic economic growth through environmentally sound industries.
Dialogue Highlights Sustainable Trade and Youth Empowerment
The call for action emerged during a national policy dialogue organized by the African Forest Forum (AFF), in partnership with the Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa (AGRA) and Ethiopian Forest Development (EFD). The event focused on strengthening Ethiopia’s sustainable trade systems, promoting green job creation, and improving compliance with the EUDR.
