Construction on two critical retention ponds under the Greater Accra Resilient and Integrated Development (GARID) project is slated to commence by the end of this year, according to the Ghana Hydrological Authority. The announcement follows public concern over the project’s progress, which initially planned for 18 such facilities to combat persistent flooding in the region.
Project Scope Revision and Current Status
Eng. Richard Kofi Amekor, Head of Drains at the Ghana Hydrological Authority, clarified that the ambitious initial plan for 18 retention ponds has been scaled back to two sites following thorough technical assessments and extensive stakeholder consultations. These two selected locations have been secured, and detailed designs are now complete.
Speaking on JoyNews’ The Pulse, Mr. Amekor highlighted that construction has been delayed due to ongoing processes, including land acquisition and the necessary preparatory documentation required for the project’s framework. He expressed optimism that physical work would begin on the ground before the year concludes.
