A targeted police operation on June 2, 2026, in Kukuom, Ahafo Region, successfully foiled a planned robbery attack and led to the recovery of significant weaponry linked to a notorious armed robbery syndicate. The joint operation, involving the Surveillance Unit of the National Operations Department and the Ashanti North Regional Police, disrupted the criminal network believed responsible for a spate of violent crimes across parts of Ghana, with ongoing efforts to apprehend additional suspects.
Intelligence-Led Disruption
The operation was a direct result of intelligence gathering aimed at dismantling organized criminal gangs responsible for armed robberies and deadly attacks on motorists and travelers. Police had identified Ali Mohammed, 23, as a key figure within the syndicate and a suspect wanted in connection with several violent incidents.
Suspect’s Criminal History
Mohammed was a person of interest in the fatal shooting of Dominic Frimpong on the Akyiresu–Kwame Dwomo Sreso road on April 12, 2026. He was also linked to two separate robbery attacks in Bosomkyekye on the Mampong–Ejura road in July 2025 and February 2026. These incidents reportedly claimed the life of a driver’s mate and contributed to rising public concern over safety on major transport routes.
Confrontation and Fatal Outcome
Investigators believe the syndicate was in the process of planning another robbery when police intervened. During the operation, Mohammed allegedly resisted arrest, opening fire on the police team with an AK-47 rifle. Officers returned fire, ultimately overpowering the suspect, who sustained gunshot injuries.
He was transported to Goaso Government Hospital for medical treatment but was pronounced dead upon arrival. “During the operation at Kukuom in the Ahafo Region, the suspect engaged the Police with an AK-47 rifle but he was overpowered and sustained gunshot injuries. He was taken to the Goaso Government Hospital for medical attention but he was pronounced dead on arrival,” a police statement confirmed.
Significant Weapon Recovery
A subsequent search of the area yielded a substantial cache of weapons and items believed to be used by the syndicate. Recovered items include one AK-47 rifle, one pump-action gun, two AK-47 magazines, nine rounds of ammunition, three mobile phones, a motorbike ignition key, a black nose mask, four talismans, and a sack.
Police officials view the seizure as a major breakthrough in combating armed robbery and violent crime in the affected regions. The recovery is expected to cripple the syndicate’s capacity for further attacks by depriving them of critical resources.
Ongoing Manhunt
The operation has provided valuable leads for investigators pursuing other members of the criminal network. Authorities have named Omar Chad, Dauda Tahidu, and Suley as suspects currently being sought. Several other accomplices are also believed to be at large.
The police have assured the public that efforts to track down and arrest the remaining suspects are a high priority. “Efforts are ongoing to arrest other members of the syndicate, including suspects Omar Chad, Dauda Tahidu, Suley, and other accomplices currently at large,” the police statement concluded.
Implications and Future Watch
This successful operation signals a strengthened police resolve against organized crime and provides a measure of relief for commuters and residents in the affected areas. The recovery of advanced weaponry highlights the evolving threat posed by armed syndicates. As the manhunt for additional suspects continues, the public will be watching for further developments and the potential impact on broader security strategies in Ghana. The focus will be on whether this disruption leads to a sustained decrease in violent crime along key routes and the apprehension of the syndicate’s leadership.
