Ethiopian Airlines, Africa’s largest carrier, is on the verge of a significant fleet expansion, with a decision expected within the next three months regarding an order for 25 smaller commercial jets. The move aims to bolster its regional and domestic network, according to CEO Mesfin Tasew Bekele, who spoke at an airline executive gathering in Brazil over the weekend.
Fleet Modernization and Regional Focus
The airline is currently evaluating three prominent aircraft models for this crucial order: the Airbus A220, the Embraer E-2, and the Boeing 737 MAX 7. The Boeing 737 MAX 7 is anticipated to receive certification from the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration this year, potentially making it a viable option.
These new aircraft will be instrumental in strengthening Ethiopian Airlines’ presence on both domestic routes within Ethiopia and expanding connectivity to neighboring countries. This strategic acquisition underscores the carrier’s commitment to enhancing intra-African travel and trade.
Navigating Market Challenges
The airline industry, including Ethiopian Airlines, is currently contending with significant economic headwinds. CEO Mesfin Tasew Bekele acknowledged that the carrier has been impacted by escalating fuel prices, exacerbated by geopolitical tensions, including the war in Iran.
In response to fluctuating passenger demand and increased operational costs, Ethiopian Airlines has adjusted its operations. This includes a reduction in flights to certain Middle Eastern destinations, such as decreasing the frequency to Dubai from twice daily to one flight per day. Bekele did not elaborate on specific issues delaying the regional jet decision but indicated it was a matter of months.
Fuel Costs a Major Concern
The financial strain of higher fuel costs is substantial. System-wide, Ethiopian Airlines is experiencing an approximately 60% increase in its expenditure on jet fuel. While the airline has successfully mitigated concerns regarding fuel supply shortages, the elevated price remains a critical challenge.
