ACCRA, GHANA – April 30, 2024 – Two men, Musah Aguruba, a carpenter, and Issah Awuni, a farmer, were remanded into custody by the Accra Circuit Court One on Tuesday, April 30, 2024, in connection with the alleged unlawful possession of a G3 assault rifle and a significant quantity of live ammunition. The arrests occurred in Bawku following a shooting incident, raising concerns about the proliferation of illegal firearms in the region.

Context of the Arrests

The incident unfolded on April 27, 2024, around 2:00 PM in the Bawku Municipality. According to Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Emmanuel Nyamekye, the area has been experiencing a peace enforcement operation by military personnel. On the day of the arrest, unidentified gunmen opened fire indiscriminately, causing panic among residents.

The Incident and Apprehension

Military personnel were dispatched to the scene upon hearing the gunshots. Upon sighting the approaching soldiers, the suspects reportedly fled. The military personnel pursued Aguruba and Awuni, eventually apprehending them near a mosque in Bawkzua.

Discovery of Weapons

A search conducted at the mosque in the presence of the accused yielded a G3 assault rifle, identified by serial number G3COF28516. Additionally, two magazines, each loaded with 20 rounds of G3 ammunition, were found. The search also uncovered 176 rounds of AK-47 ammunition.

Suspects’ Defense and Ongoing Investigation

During the investigation, both Aguruba and Awuni denied the charges. They claimed they were at the mosque to pray and suggested that an unknown individual might have hidden the weapons there, as the mosque was reportedly open. DSP Nyamekye stated that investigations are ongoing to ascertain the veracity of their claims.

Court Proceedings and Remand

The Accra Circuit Court One remanded the two men into custody. They are scheduled to reappear in court on May 14, 2024. The court’s decision underscores the seriousness of the charges related to illegal possession of firearms, which carry significant penalties under Ghanaian law.

Broader Implications

The alleged possession of a G3 assault rifle and a large cache of ammunition, including both G3 and AK-47 rounds, highlights persistent challenges with illegal arms trafficking and possession in conflict-prone areas like Bawku. Such incidents can exacerbate security concerns and hinder peace efforts.

What to Watch Next

The upcoming court appearance on May 14 will be crucial for further developments in the case. Observers will be watching for any new evidence presented, the outcome of the ongoing police investigations, and whether the suspects’ claims about the weapons’ origin are substantiated. The broader security implications for the Bawku region and Ghana’s efforts to curb illegal firearms will remain a key focus.
