The Bono East Regional Command of the Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC) conducted a targeted anti-drug operation on Wednesday, May 6, 2026, along the Akrofrom stretch of the Techiman–Wenchi highway. The operation aimed to intercept illicit drug trafficking, focusing on vehicles commonly used to transport suspected narcotic substances hidden within sacks of charcoal.
Context of the Operation
Intelligence gathered by NACOC identified the Techiman–Kenten to Wenchi corridor as a burgeoning transit route for drug traffickers. This route has reportedly become a preferred path for moving cannabis and other illicit substances within the Bono East Region.
Enforcement and Sensitisation
The special enforcement and public sensitisation operation, which ran from 8:00 am to 11:20 am, involved a seven-member NACOC team. Officers executed stop-and-search protocols on tricycles (locally known as Pragya and Aboboyaa), motorcycles, and commercial taxis. The primary focus was on vehicles suspected of concealing drugs within charcoal sacks.
During the three-hour exercise, approximately 200 tricycles, over 100 motorcycles, and five taxis were stopped, profiled, and thoroughly searched. This proactive measure aimed to disrupt the flow of illegal drugs through the region.
Public Education Component
Beyond enforcement, NACOC officers engaged directly with transport operators. This public education component focused on raising awareness about the severe health and social repercussions of drug abuse, specifically highlighting the dangers associated with cannabis and tramadol. Riders and drivers were also apprised of the stringent legal consequences linked to the transportation of narcotic substances.
Transport operators were urged to become active partners in combating drug trafficking. NACOC encouraged them to report any suspicious activities or unusual movements observed within their operational areas, thereby strengthening community-police collaboration.
Commitment to Sustained Action
The Bono East Regional Command of NACOC has reiterated its dedication to ongoing intelligence-led operations. The commission emphasized its commitment to continuous public education initiatives and robust collaboration with other security agencies. These efforts are crucial for dismantling drug trafficking networks and safeguarding communities from the pervasive harm caused by illicit drugs.
Future Outlook
The intensified operations along key transit routes like the Techiman–Wenchi highway signal NACOC’s strategic shift towards proactive disruption of drug supply chains. The success of such intelligence-driven exercises, coupled with community engagement, will be critical in assessing the long-term impact on drug trafficking patterns in the Bono East Region and beyond. Observers will watch closely for further operations and the potential development of new trafficking routes as law enforcement continues its efforts.
