Central Regional Health Directorate Launches Investigation into Maternal Death at Kasoa Hospital

The Ghana Health Service’s Central Regional Health Directorate has initiated a comprehensive investigation into the death of a mother at the Kasoa Mother and Child Hospital. The probe, launched on Wednesday, April 29, aims to thoroughly review the circumstances surrounding the fatality and ensure transparency in the process.

Urgent Review Underway

Dr. Mrs. Alberta Adjebeng Biritwum-Nyarko, the Regional Director of Health Services, issued a statement expressing deep condolences to the grieving family. The directorate emphasized the gravity of the situation, stating, “The death of a mother is a profoundly painful event, and we treat this matter with the utmost seriousness and concern.”

To conduct a “thorough, objective, and transparent review,” a multi-agency committee has been formed. This committee comprises representatives from key medical institutions and governmental bodies, including the Cape Coast Teaching Hospital, the Trauma and Specialist Hospital, the Central Regional Health Directorate itself, the Regional Coordinating Council, and the Attorney-General’s Department.

Context of Maternal Healthcare in the Region

The Kasoa Mother and Child Hospital serves a rapidly expanding population within the Central Region. It plays a critical role in delivering essential maternal and child healthcare services to the community. This incident occurs against the backdrop of ongoing national efforts to address maternal mortality, a significant public health challenge in Ghana.

Maternal mortality remains a persistent concern across the country. National initiatives are continuously being implemented to enhance access to quality healthcare and to reduce preventable deaths associated with pregnancy and childbirth. The Kasoa hospital’s role is therefore vital in the region’s healthcare infrastructure.

Commitment to Patient Safety

The Directorate has assured the public that the findings and subsequent recommendations from the investigation will be made public upon its completion. The primary objective extends beyond identifying the causes of this specific death; it is also geared towards implementing measures to prevent similar tragedies in the future.

In the interim, the Health Directorate is appealing for public calm and cooperation, urging citizens to allow the due process to unfold without interference. “We wish to assure the people of the Central Region and the general public that the Central Regional Health Directorate remains firmly committed to the safety, quality of care, and well-being of all patients, particularly mothers and children,” the statement concluded.

Looking Ahead

The outcome of this investigation will be closely watched, potentially influencing protocols and resource allocation for maternal healthcare facilities in the Central Region and beyond. The commitment to transparency and public disclosure of findings signals a potential shift in how such critical incidents are handled, aiming to rebuild trust and reinforce patient safety standards. Observers will be looking to see if the recommendations lead to tangible improvements in maternal care delivery within the Kasoa Mother and Child Hospital and other similar facilities across Ghana.
