Jirapa MP Addresses Hospital Shortages Amidst Urgent Calls for Facility Overhaul

Jirapa, Ghana – The Member of Parliament for the Jirapa Constituency, Cletus Seidu Dapilah, has donated 160 bedsheets and an equal number of pillowcases to the St. Joseph Catholic Hospital. This timely intervention aims to improve patient care and mitigate hospital-acquired infections, responding directly to a critical appeal from the hospital and the Municipal Health Directorate concerning severe shortages of essential ward supplies at the region’s oldest healthcare facility.

Addressing Immediate Needs

MP Dapilah stated that his office acted swiftly upon receiving the request, highlighting his dedication to the constituency’s health infrastructure. He emphasized that health is paramount for the well-being and daily activities of his constituents.

“As a Member of Parliament, I won’t neglect health issues because health is life. I want to see my people being healthy so that they can go around to do their normal daily activities,” Dapilah remarked during the donation ceremony.

The donation directly addresses the hospital’s immediate logistical challenges. Kaa-Ih Edward, the Jirapa Municipal Health Director, expressed deep gratitude for the MP’s consistent support, noting the significant clinical impact the new linens will have.

Edward explained the direct benefit in reducing infections. “With this, it will go a long way to reducing infections because, you know, when patients come to the wards with their bedsheets, they rather get some infections from the hospital. But with this, with their pillows, nosocomial infections and other infections… it will reduce infections,” he stated.

A Cry for Systemic Change

While the donation offers immediate relief, the underlying issues plaguing the nearly 70-year-old St. Joseph Catholic Hospital remain critical. Dr. Silas Gbogere, the Acting Medical Superintendent, used the occasion to issue a stark warning about the facility’s dire state.

Dr. Gbogere highlighted the dilapidated infrastructure. “You have structures that are no longer very fit… year in year out, we are always battling with leakages here and there. We have to repair works here and there, and that puts a toll on our finances,” he revealed.

The hospital also faces significant equipment deficits. Obsolete medical equipment, including non-functional patient monitors and defibrillators, severely compromises patient care. Furthermore, an aging X-ray machine and frequently malfunctioning laboratory equipment hinder accurate diagnostics.

Human Resource Crisis

The human resource situation is equally alarming. The hospital, a major healthcare provider for the region, is currently staffed by only three medical doctors. This small team is forced to work extended hours, leading to considerable staff burnout and potential risks to patient safety.

Dr. Gbogere pointed out that while the MP’s donation matched the hospital’s 160-bed capacity, standard infection control protocols necessitate at least four sets of bed linens per bed. This allows for regular changes and sterilization, a practice currently challenging to maintain consistently.

Looking Ahead

The donation from MP Dapilah underscores the critical need for consistent support for healthcare facilities in the region. However, the urgent appeals from hospital management highlight a systemic challenge requiring broader intervention.

The situation at St. Joseph Catholic Hospital serves as a microcosm of the infrastructural and logistical challenges faced by many older healthcare institutions in Ghana. Future attention will likely focus on whether government initiatives, corporate partnerships, or public-private collaborations can be mobilized to address the facility’s deep-seated needs, moving beyond essential logistical support to comprehensive upgrades and sustained resource allocation.
