Tema Port Director, Zumah Tebon esq, led staff, management, and stakeholders in a health walk on Saturday, May 16, 2026, to promote healthy living, workplace wellness, and occupational safety within the busy port community. The event, themed ‘The Maiden Edition of the DP’s Health Walk’, aimed to encourage healthier lifestyles among workers operating in a demanding environment, at a time when non-communicable diseases (NCDs) are a growing concern in Ghana.
Context: The Growing NCD Burden in Ghana
Ghana is currently facing a significant increase in non-communicable diseases, such as hypertension, diabetes, stroke, heart diseases, and cancers. These lifestyle-related illnesses are rapidly becoming the leading causes of death, surpassing infectious diseases. National surveys and health authorities report that NCDs are responsible for approximately 42 to 45 percent of all fatalities in the country. Key contributing factors identified by health experts include unhealthy diets, lack of physical activity, high stress levels, smoking, and excessive alcohol consumption.
Promoting Wellness at Tema Port
In response to this public health challenge, the management of Tema Port has initiated programs to encourage healthier routines. The health walk was a significant part of these efforts, bringing together employees from various departments, maritime industry players, security agencies, and other stakeholders. Participants engaged in an enthusiastic walk through designated routes within the harbour area, fostering a sense of unity and highlighting the importance of physical fitness.
Director Zumah Tebon emphasized the direct link between good health, physical fitness, and workplace productivity. He stated that the initiative aims not only to foster personal wellbeing but also to enhance collaboration and social interaction among the diverse groups operating within the port.
The Demands of Port Operations
Mr. Tebon acknowledged the inherently demanding and stressful nature of port operations. He explained that the constant activity and high-stakes environment necessitate regular exercise and wellness activities to ensure workers remain active, healthy, and physically fit. This sustained physical condition is crucial for maintaining optimal productivity and efficiency.
The health walk also served as a platform to raise awareness about occupational health and safety protocols within the port enclave. Participants were urged to integrate regular physical activity into their daily lives, thereby contributing more effectively to the growth of Tema Port and Ghana’s vital trade sector.
Positive Reception and Future Outlook
Feedback from participants was overwhelmingly positive, with many describing the event as timely and impactful. They highlighted its role in fostering teamwork, unity, and stronger relationships within the port community. One freight forwarder noted that the walk was particularly beneficial for improving health indicators.
Management at Tema Port expressed optimism about the health walk becoming a recurring event on the port’s annual calendar. This commitment underscores a broader strategy for staff wellness and stakeholder engagement, recognizing the critical role of a healthy workforce in the success of port operations.
Looking Ahead: Sustaining Momentum
The success of this inaugural health walk sets a precedent for future wellness initiatives at Tema Port. The focus will likely remain on integrating physical activity and health awareness into the daily routines of port workers and stakeholders. As NCDs continue to pose a significant threat, the port’s proactive approach serves as a model for other demanding work environments. Continued emphasis on preventive healthcare, regular check-ups, and promoting active lifestyles will be crucial for sustaining productivity and ensuring the long-term health of the port community.
