Ghana’s Deputy Minister of Transport, Dorcas Affo-Toffey, led a high-level delegation to China this past week, seeking to modernize the nation’s public transport system and expand its fleet with advanced, environmentally friendly vehicles. The visit, which included officials from the Ministry of Transport and Metro Mass Transit Limited (MMTL), focused on exploring opportunities with Chinese manufacturers in the industrial city of Shiyan.
Assessing Advanced Manufacturing and Electric Mobility
The delegation toured Xiangyang Tenglong Automobile Co., Ltd., a prominent manufacturer specializing in new energy buses and intelligent transport systems. During the visit, Ghanaian officials observed the company’s sophisticated production processes, including stamping, welding, painting, and final assembly, which are supported by advanced equipment and automated systems.
This engagement is part of a broader government agenda aimed at enhancing Ghana’s public transportation through strategic international partnerships. Madam Affo-Toffey highlighted the trip’s objective: “to explore opportunities for acquiring modern buses and building technical partnerships that will help improve efficiency, safety, and reliability in Ghana’s transport sector.”
