Philadelphia-born Twitch streamer Isaiah Thomas, known online as hmblzayy, was struck by a car live on camera Tuesday while undertaking a 3,000-mile walk from Philadelphia to California. The incident occurred on Route 40 in Richmond, Indiana, when a vehicle collided with the escort vehicle behind Thomas, which then propelled Thomas forward, resulting in his injury. The accident, captured and shared online, has brought renewed attention to Thomas’s ambitious fundraising effort to establish a trade school for underprivileged youth.
Charity Walk Amidst Personal Recovery
Thomas, 27, embarked on this monumental journey to raise funds for a trade school, a cause close to his heart. He has already amassed over $50,000 for his initiative. This challenge is particularly significant as Thomas had to undergo therapy and relearn to walk after a serious car accident just six months prior.
The streamer typically walks facing oncoming traffic, equipped with reflectors and a cart. However, on the day of the incident, a fan offered to provide escort with hazard lights on, a plan Thomas confirmed with local police.

Describing the event to the BBC, Thomas stated, “It was so fast, but it felt like it was in slow motion; it was like I was just gliding in the air – it was crazy.” He recalled a barrage of thoughts during the impact, primarily concerning his well-being and the potential severity of his injuries.
The force of the collision was significant enough to leave both vehicles “totalled,” according to Thomas. Fortunately, neither driver sustained serious injuries. Thomas himself was taken to the hospital and was relieved to report only sprained ankles and minor injuries.

Despite the shock and physical trauma, Thomas expressed an unwavering commitment to completing his walk. He plans to take a few days for rest and recovery, including ice baths, to expedite his return to the strenuous journey.
“I got about three more months left to get there – about 2,000 miles left. So I got a long way to go,” Thomas stated, underscoring his resolve. The incident, though harrowing, has not deterred him from his mission to support educational opportunities for children unable to pursue traditional college paths.
